Originally a smallish five-roomed cottage built in 1885 for Mr Thomas Reid, three years on it was purchased by Mrs Henry Sparks, wife of Henry York Sparks. one of Adelaides prominent businessman and philanthropists. Henry Sparks made only one foray into the world of politics preferring to use his considerable influence behind the scenes. He was persuaded to become Mayor of Glenelg in 1898, but held the position for just one year.
