Port Noarlunga

As one of South Australias premier seaside holiday destinations, Port Noarlunga is a parents dream. A giant playground, safe swimming beach and an offshore reef are just some of the attractions that will amuse kids for hours.

Picturesque steep red sandstone cliffs, an intriguing estuary and fine beaches have proved attractive to holidaymakers since the 19th century and the pretty town still commands as much attention today.

Port Noarlunga is a popular fishing spot, well-known for its salmon fishing during the winter. The best time to fish is generally at first light in the morning, on the coldest, windiest days, when the salmon seek refuge inside the reef. The nearby mouth of the Onkaparinga River, which flows into the sea here, is popular for catching smaller salmon, some flathead, bream and small mulloway.

The jetty extends out to a narrow 400-metre long reef, which is popular for snorkelling and scuba diving and is home to more than 200 marine plant species and 50 fish species. Be aware that fishing is not permitted within 25 metres of the reef. The reef also shelters the beach from large waves, making it a great swimming spot for youngsters, along with surf lifesavers patrolling the beach between November and March.

A short stroll up the Port Noarlunga main street will bring you to a number of cafs, a pub, fish and chip shop and specialty shops.
