PETERBOROUGH TOURISM WINS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TOURISM AWARD WITH THE HERITAGE RAIL TRAIL

Small regional councils can think as big as anybody

A string of tiny towns along the remote Barrier Highway were the big winners when the judging panel of the South Australian Tourism Awards gave the 2015 Destination Marketing Award to Peterborough Council.

In January, Peterborough Tourism banded together with 13 small communities stretching 400km from Broken Hill to Port Pirie. Realising they were in possession of one of Australias greatest industrial stories, they formed the Heritage Rail Trail, which effectively told how a little 36 railway line took a vast mineral resource to the world.

Today, that railway line is disused and many of these communities are struggling, said Mayor Ruth Whittle of Peterborough. But the part they played in transforming Australia from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy was profound.

We had this fantastic story. We just needed to find a compelling way to tell it.

When the Heritage Rail Trail was launched in January, Peterborough Council set a simple goal: to get travellers on the Barrier Highway to stop and spend a little time in these towns.

The Council also set targets by which they could measure the Trails success, including annual visitation to Peterboroughs Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre.

I hope we proved that size is no barrier to success, said Mayor Whittle. This award clearly shows that small councils can think just as big as anybody.

The Stones and Rails CD was created by local Historian John Mannion and local artist John O’Dea to share the journey into the history of the Orroroo Carrieton district. A copy of the CD can be purchased from the District Councill of Orroroo Carrieton office.

Follow this journey from Orroroo through to Walloway and see the Monument for the 16th November 1901 Train Crash. You will then be taken to Eurelia and up to Carrieton. The trail will take you out to JOhnburgh and back to Black Rock where you will be amazed by Magnetic Hill. You will then progress on to Pekina and back to Orroroo.

The Pekina Creek Irrigation Scheme was developed to bring new settlers to the Orroroo district. Work began on this scheme in 1906, it took 20 years before the Government agreed to allows the scheme to go ahead. This was an experimental scheme when it first began in because it was the first and cheapest of its kind in South Australia.

Mr Bradley, Engineering Cheof worked with 15 horse and bullock teams to excavate and puddle the dam using the damp core method.

The Pekina Creek Reservoir was officially open by His Excellency the Governor, Sir Day Hort Bosanquet on 10th February 1910.
The capital cost of the dam was approximately 76,100 pounds. THe pipes uded on this scheme totalled a weight of 1,500 tons.

The purpose of the Pekina Creek Irrigation Scheme was to irrigate forty blocks of ten acres of Lucerne growing and dairy farming. All the blocks were adjoined and were purchased from W.S. Lillecrapp.

The reservoir had an initial capacity of 1284-acre feet and this was increased to 1540 mega litres by raising the height of the dam wall by 10 feet. Acre-foot is a measurement that was used in irrigation, it is the amount covering one acre to the depth of one foot. It is equal to 43,560 cubic feet.

Water to the blocks was through a pipeline to individual sprinkler systems. The open channel system was introduced in 1926, where irrigators had access to water by ‘gates’ for flood irrigation. Water delivered to individual farms was monitored by a Dethridge Meter, a simple in flow waterwheel flow measuring device which was developed in 1910.

The Pekina Irrigation Scheme was successful for many years, however unsuitable farming practices in the creek catchment area resulted in soil erosion and consequent siltation of the dam. By 1944 the siltation had reduced the dam’s capacity, despite attempts the overcome this problem by raising the outlet pipes; the irrigation scheme was abandoned in the 1970’s.

Take the opportunity to leave the car behind and take a walk around one of our walking trails and admire the spectacular landscape unfolding in front of you. The views are ever changing; you will discover more sights the longer you stay.

The walks can vary depending on your time and abilities. Collect information from the Visitor Information Centre located next to the Gum Tree Cafe in the town centre. The Information Centre has bikes available to use free of charge, this is a great way to see the town and to ass come variation to your travels.

Orroroo was surveyed in 1875 and later that year a name was submitted. Oorrooroo along with three others were submitted, it was approved with the revised spelling, Orroroo adopted in a letter dated 4 September 1875. There has been many discussion about the meaning of Orroroo. A local well versed in the local Aboriginal language insists that the true meaning is ‘the rendezvous of the magpie’.

The streets of Orroroo are lined with history! The many buildings of the town date back to 1875 and each have a unique story to tell. Take the walk around town or jump on one of our push bikes and go back in time.

If you are truly captivated with our history and need more, you can visit the Historical Society on Fourth Street and uncover the stories of the past.

The Early Settlers Cottage is located on the corner of Fourth Street and South Terrace and is like taking a step back in to the 1800’s. The cottage itself adn all of it’s contents were donated to the care of teh District Council of Orroroo Carrieton. To gain access to the cottage, visit the Council Office in the town centre. While you are in the Town Hall, make sure you see the Moose and the honor rolls.
