Southern Drive
This tour takes you through the heartland of South Australia’s mid-north, where you will meet passionate bakers, quirky publicans, welcoming horticulturalists, as well as fourth generation fishermen offering the best and freshest produce in the region. There is even an old world soft-drink maker to find, offering traditional sarsaparilla and creaming sodas to take you back to your childhood.
The Southern Trail includes Port Pirie, a town which has radically re-invented itself across the last decade. Pirie now offers a great array of experiences, not to be missed, as well as great Cafes, pubs and local producers.
Spot at ghost at the Gladstone Gaol, search for bunyip, trout and cod in the Broughton River at Spalding, and quest for pine-mushrooms in the Wirrabara forest (make sure you know what you are doing).
There are great caravan parks, budget accommodation as well as quality bed and breakfasts in the region, so be sure to plan for a couple of nights to support your culinary escapade.
